January 2016
Winter Dangers

*Antifreeze is Highly Toxic! Cats and Dogs are attracted to the sweet smell and taste of antifreeze and will often sample if left out in a container or spilled on the garage floor.  Most animals act like they are "drunk" and convulse if ingested.  Rush to your vet immediately!

*Salt used to melt ice and snow are somewhat harsh on delicate paws.  Alternatives are to find "pet-safe" salt or protect your pet's paws with booties.

*Make some noise when you get into your vehicle before starting it!  Cars are a good hiding place for wildlife and stray cats in the cold winter months.
Winter Grooming & Training

*Training is a Great way to keep your dog active this Winter!  Brush up on obedience, find a tricks class or start a new sport like rally, agility or nose work!

*Maintain your dogs paws & nails.  Be sure to clip any long hair on the bottom of the paws to prevent painful snow or ice balls from sticking to the bottom of their feet.  It is also a good idea to keep nails short.  Cold toenails break more easily when running through the snow and ice.

*Regular brushing can significantly reduce the amount  of shedding and matting in your pet's coat.  Excess hair can cause mats which can become painful and harmful to your pets skin.  Keeping the coat in a breathable condition allows it to insulate your dog as it's supposed to.  Brushing also helps distribute the natural oils in your pet's coat, relieving dry winter skin.

Recipe of the Month
Leftover Turkey Dinner
Dog Biscuits

Ingredients
1 cup cooked turkey
1/4 cup water
1 cup sweet potatoes
1/4 chopped dried cranberries
1 egg
2 cups whole wheat flour

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 325F.
In a food processor, puree the cooked turkey and water together.
Add the cooked sweet potatoes and the egg to the food processor and blend together.
Scoop out the mixture into a large bowl.
Add the cranberries. I used my Magic Bullet blender to chop up the cranberries into fine pieces, but dicing them with a knife works just as well.
Add the flour to the bowl and stir until the mixture forms a bread dough like consistency. I get right in there and mix it up with my hands.
If you use cooked cranberries, you may need to add a little extra flour to the mixture. Start by adding one tbsp at a time.
Place the dough on a well floured surface and roll out to 1/4" thickness. The dough is fairly sticky, so you will need to keep dusting with flour to prevent it from sticking to your counters and the rolling pin.
Use whatever shape and size cookie cutters that you like and cut out individual dog treats, re-rolling and cutting the dough into shapes until it is gone. This is where you add the heaping cup of love because this step requires a little patience and time on your part.
Place the biscuits on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown. They don't rise or expand, so you can place them close together, getting as many as you can on one sheet. Because they have a fairly long cooking time, unlike regular cookies for ourselves, I place two pans in the oven at a time.
